Diagnostic Medical Sonographers direct high frequency sound waves into the body to obtain medical images that assist physicians with the diagnosis of disease.  Sonographers must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills, strong critical thinking skills, and significant hand-eye coordination.

 

The Boise State Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is one calendar year long, consisting of integrated classroom and clinical education.  The student is responsible to provide transportation to and from the clinical sites.

Candidates for the Boise State Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program must meet the following prerequisites:

  • Associate degree or higher in a direct patient care field from a regionally accredited institution of higher education

    • Radiography, Respiratory Therapy, Nursing, etc. (curricula must contain 50 or more program specific credits)

    • Applicants may be completing the final semester of their direct patient care education at the time of application.

  • Hold an active registration and/or licensed in good standing with the appropriate state and/or national agency. 

    • Acceptance into the Program will be contingent upon successfully passing the appropriate national examination by August 15 of the year accepted.

  • Completion of the general prerequisite course work - see Curriculum & Prerequisite link below.

  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above

  • Complete application, transcripts, and reference forms must be received in the Department of Radiologic Sciences at Boise State University no later than March 1 to be considered for the program each fall.

 

Selection Process:
  • Application materials will be reviewed and selected applicants will be invited for an interview in mid-March.  Preference will be given to Radiologic Technologists

  • Additional points will be awarded to applicants that have completed their university core elective requirements and/or are degree seeking.  Transfer credits will be assessed on an individual basis.  See transfer policy link below under additional program links.   

  • Candidates will be notified about their selection status for the program by April 15.  Classes begin with the normal fall academic semester in late August. 

 

Candidates selected into the program will:
  • Submit to a criminal background check at their own expense by the stated deadline in May following program acceptance.  Information from the background check deemed to be detrimental to the care of patients will result in dismissal from the program. 

  • Demonstrate evidence of an annual PPD test, a positive Rubella/Rubeola and Varicella titre, and a current CPR for healthcare workers certification before beginning their clinical education. 

 

Program Accreditation:

The Boise State University Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs upon the recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography

 

National Registry Examinations:

Both credentialing agencies, ARRT and ARDMS, assess the ethical standard of all applicants.   Criminal convictions may prevent the applicant from taking the certification examinations.  Applicants should refer to each agency's website for clarifying information.  The ARRT web site is http://www.arrt.org; the ARDMS website is http://www.ardms.org.
