A Radiologic
Technologist (Radiographer) utilizes independent judgment to apply knowledge
and skills to successfully obtain a diagnostic imaging study while maintaining quality patient care and minimizing radiation
exposure. Technologists generally
are employed in acute care settings, ambulatory care settings, physicians
offices, in education, and in management or sales positions. With additional education and training,
radiographers may be employed in Radiation Therapy, Computed Tomography,
Mammography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Nuclear
Medicine, Special Vascular Imaging and Cardiac Catheterization. The three-year Associate of Science Degree consists of a prerequisite freshman year and a two-year professional component (Sophomore and Junior years). The pre-professional, freshman year is open to any student accepted for admission to Boise State University. Due to the limited space in the affiliate clinical sites, only a limited number of students can be accepted into the professional phase. Students wishing admission into the professional phase must submit an A.S. Radiologic Sciences Program Admission Application and three References by February 15th, 4:00 pm (or Friday before, if weekend) of the application year. Continuation into the professional phase of the program is contingent upon (it is recommended that you meet with an advisor for more information):
During the sophomore and junior years, students will take academic courses on campus and clinical education courses at various affiliated agencies. This type of integrated program is beneficial for students to gain essential knowledge and skills required to become a competent radiologic technologist. A ten- week summer clinical rotation is required between the sophomore and junior years. The program is affiliated with the major acute care agencies in the Treasure Valley and Ontario, OR, and ambulatory care environments. Upon successful completion of the BSU Associate Degree, Radiographer Program, students can opt to complete an additional senior year in either General Studies, Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging or Diagnostic Medical Sonography for Baccalaureate degree completion. The Radiographer Program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. The curriculum includes both academic and clinical educational components. All required courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C. When all requirements for the Associate Degree are completed, the student will be eligible to take the national certification examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Conviction of a crime (misdemeanor or felony) could leave an individual ineligible for participation in the certifying test. Upon successful completion of this examination, the students becomes a Registered Radiologic Technologist - R.T.(R). Students may complete the prerequisite freshman year and all core courses at another academic institution and transfer to Boise State University for the Radiographer Program. |
